Description

are T-2 and HT-2 toxins trichothecene mycotoxins produced primarily by fungi of the genus Fusarium. These natural contaminants develop in cereals and their derivatives during storage or under climatic conditions favorable to mold growth.

Their presence poses a risk to human and animal health, as these compounds can disrupt protein synthesis and cause immunotoxic, hematotoxic, and digestive. Measuring T-2 and HT-2 toxins helps ensure safety food regulatory compliance according to Regulation (EU) No 1881/2006 recommendationsEFSA.

Analytical methods: HPLC and LC-MS/MS

The analysis of mycotoxins T-2 and HT-2 relies on high-precision chromatographic techniques:

  • HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) : used for separation and quantification after extraction and purification on immunoaffin column.
  • LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry) : reference method allowing the simultaneous detection of several mycotoxins (T-2, HT-2, DON, ZEA, fumonisins, etc.) at trace levels.

These methods ensure excellent sensitivity (ng/kg) and maximum reliabilityaccredited laboratories ISO 17025.

Industrial and regulatory applications

The measurement of T-2 and HT-2 toxins is applicable in:

  • Human nutrition : control of raw materials (wheat, corn, oats, rice) and finished products (flours, breads, biscuits, cereals).
  • Animal nutrition : verification of compound feeds, corn silage, oilseed cakes and agricultural by-products.
  • Nutraceuticals and plant extracts : securing powders and plant raw materials used in food supplements.
  • Regulatory studies and exports : compliance with European and international thresholds.

This test can be combined with the measurement of zearalenone (ZEA) or deoxynivalenol (DON) for a complete multi-mycotoxin analysis.

Matrices involved

YesWeLab's partner laboratories perform T-2 and HT-2 toxin assays on:

  • Cereals and raw grains (wheat, corn, barley, oats, rice)
  • Flours, brans, flakes and derivative products
  • Compound animal feed
  • Nutraceutical plant extracts and powders

Each protocol is adjusted according to the matrix, the expected level of contamination and the regulatory framework applicable
