Description
Genistein is an aglycone isoflavone naturally found in soybeans, red clover, and other legumes. Recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and phytoestrogenic properties, it is frequently used as an active ingredient in nutraceutical products targeting hormonal, cardiovascular, or bone health.
Unlike genistin, its glycosylated form, genistein is directly bioavailable and biologically active. Its precise dosage allows for the standardization of plant extracts, guarantees the active ingredient content in formulations, and validates nutritional and health claims.
Objectives of genistein assay
Measuring the concentration of this molecule is recommended in several industrial and scientific contexts:
- Quality control of soy-based food supplements
- Quantification in standardized plant extracts
- Monitoring bioavailability during clinical studies
- Verification of the actual isoflavone content in enriched formulations
- Selection and evaluation of plant-based raw materials
Available analytical methods
YesWeLab offers two reference methods for genistein analysis:
- HPLC-DAD: Liquid chromatography with UV detection at 260–280 nm, ideal for simple matrices and aglycone assay.
- LC-MS/MS: tandem mass spectrometry, more sensitive and selective, suitable for complex matrices or low concentrations.
Samples are generally subjected to liquid-liquid or hydroalcoholic extraction, with or without prior enzymatic hydrolysis, depending on whether the aim is to quantify the free or total form (free + glycosylated).
Analyzable matrices
The assay of genistein is applicable to many plant or processed matrices:
- Extracts of soy or red clover
- Nutraceutical powders and capsules
- Juices and fortified drinks
- Fermented legume-based products (e.g., tempeh, miso)
- Supplements for women's health or menopause
Industrial applications
- Nutraceuticals: formulation of supplements for anti-aging, joints, bone health, menopause
- Herbal medicine: selection of extracts standardized in isoflavones
- Research: pharmacokinetic study, bioavailability or biological activity
- Cosmetics: integration into anti-aging or regenerating formulations
