PPMA (polymethyl methacrylate) dosage
Description
Polymethyl methacrylate (PPMA) determination allows the identification and quantification of this thermoplastic polymer widely used in coatings, packaging, cosmetics and technical materials .
PPMA is recognized for its transparency, chemical resistance and thermal stability . However, its analytical control is crucial to ensure the conformity of formulations , assess the purity of the polymer and detect possible residual impurities from the polymerization process.
Analytical methods
PPMA analysis is based on chromatography and spectroscopy to identify monomers and additives:
- GC-MS (gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) : detection of residual methyl methacrylate and organic solvents,
- FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) : structural identification of the polymer and verification of material conformity,
- Gravimetry : measurement of the dry extract rate and control of the pure polymer content.
These analyses can be carried out in accordance with ISO 11357 , ASTM D3418 or ISO 10993 (biological evaluation of materials in contact with skin) standards.
Industrial applications
PPMA dosage is essential in many sectors:
- Polymer and plastics industry : control of the composition of films, resins and varnishes.
- Cosmetics : verification of the conformity of nail polishes, gels or hair styling products containing polymethacrylate.
- Packaging and food contact materials : detection of monomer residues (methyl methacrylate) in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 .
- Formulation and research : characterization of copolymers, plasticizers and additives used in complex matrices.
Analyzed matrices
- Plastic films and technical sheets
- Polymeric varnishes and coatings
- Cosmetics (varnishes, gels, lacquers)
- Composite resins and polymers
- Polymeric powders and granules
Further analyses recommended
For a complete characterization of polymer materials , YesWeLab recommends:
- FTIR analysis : structural identification of polymers,
- Thermal analysis by DSC : study of the glass transition and melting of the material,
- ATG analysis : evaluation of thermal stability,
- Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) : observation of surface morphology,
- Tensile test : measurement of the mechanical properties of the polymer.
