Description

Vapor pressure analysis determines the volatility of a liquid substance at a given temperature. This physicochemical parameter is fundamental for evaluating the behavior of a compound under normal conditions of use, storage, or processing. It plays a major role in the regulatory classification of chemical substances, risk assessment (REACH, CLP), and the formulation of evaporation-sensitive products.

Vapor pressure directly influences stability, flammability, evaporation, potential emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and interactions with packaging materials. Measurement is also crucial in the design of polymers, technical solvents, inks, adhesives, aromatic compounds, and raw materials with controlled volatility.

Principle of the method

The analysis is generally performed by:
Isoteniscopic method : measurement of the pressure at equilibrium in a temperature-controlled chamber, the reference technique for determining the vapor pressure of pure substances or mixtures.
Dynamic saturation method : circulation of a carrier gas above the liquid to determine the vapor pressure from the measured concentration, suitable for more volatile substances.

Depending on the requirements, the test can be carried out at a fixed or variable temperature, in order to establish a complete volatility profile and extrapolate data to operational conditions.

Industrial applications

Vapor pressure analysis is used for:
regulatory classification of substances according to REACH and CLP,
selection or comparison of solvents ,
• optimization of packaging limiting mass losses by evaporation,
• formulation of adhesives, coatings, polymers and inks,
• study of the thermal or volatile behavior of products in R&D,
• evaluation of VOC emissions,
• prediction of flammability or internal pressure risks (packaging).

Analyzed matrices

• Organic solvents
• Monomers and polymer precursors
• Technical oils
• Inks, varnishes, adhesives
• Volatile or semi-volatile substances
• Complex liquid formulations
• Aromatic or aliphatic solvents
• Raw materials for packaging

Analysis via YesWeLab

YesWeLab collaborates with a rigorously selected network of specialized laboratories, most of which are certified or accredited (ISO 17025, COFRAC). Each analysis is entrusted to the most suitable laboratory based on the matrix, the required sensitivity, and the necessary method. Our scientific team assists you in choosing the parameters, interpreting the results, and ensuring regulatory compliance, particularly with REACH and CLP.

Since 2020, many manufacturers in materials, packaging, chemicals and formulation have entrusted us with their testing via our digital platform, enabling smooth management of requests, from quote to receipt of reports.
