Description

Tyrosol measurement allows the quantification of this natural phenol, which is widely present in olive oil, grape extracts, and certain medicinal plants.
Known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties , tyrosol plays a key role in preventing oxidative stress and cardiovascular protection , particularly within the Mediterranean diet.

The analysis is carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) , often coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for sensitive and specific detection. This method allows for an accurate analytical profile to be obtained, even in complex matrices such as vegetable oils.

Analytical methods and protocols

The dosage is based on selective extraction of polyphenols, followed by chromatographic separation on a C18 column.

  • In HPLC-DAD , detection is performed at approximately 280 nm , a wavelength specific to phenolic compounds.
  • In LC-MS/MS , quantification is more precise and allows tyrosol to be distinguished from other related compounds such as hydroxytyrosol or phenolic acids.

The parameters analyzed include:

  • The tyrosol concentration (mg/kg or mg/g),
  • The overall polyphenolic profile ,
  • The purity of the sample ,
  • And the stability of the compounds during storage.

Protocols may follow IOC /T.20/Doc.29 (olive oil) or pharmacopoeial for plant extracts.

Industrial and scientific applications

Tyrosol dosage is essential in the following sectors:

  • Nutraceuticals : quality control of olive or vine extracts, formulation of food supplements with antioxidant properties.
  • Agri-food : evaluation of the nutritional quality of virgin oils and Mediterranean products.
  • Natural cosmetics : use of tyrosol for its protective and soothing properties on the skin.
  • Phytosanitary research : identification of bioactive compounds in plant extracts rich in polyphenols.

This analysis ensures the standardization of raw materials , the traceability of batches , and the promotion of functional claims (“rich in antioxidants”, “from quality olive oil”).

Affected matrices

  • Vegetable oils (olive, grape seed, argan),
  • Plant extracts rich in polyphenols,
  • Herbal food supplements,
  • Nutraceutical products with cardio-protective aims,
  • Cosmetics based on olive extracts.
