Description
Suramin quantification is a specialized analysis, primarily performed in applied research or the development of experimental formulations. A synthetic molecule, suramin is historically known for its antiparasitic properties, but today it is mainly used as a pharmacological tool in basic research and certain advanced formulation projects. YesWeLab offers its quantification by LC-MS/MS, a highly sensitive and selective method, as well as by HPLC in specific analytical contexts.
What is suramin?
Suramin (CAS: 129-46-4) is a synthetic polysulfone compound, initially developed as a treatment for trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and certain tropical parasitic diseases. Today, its use is concentrated in pharmacological research applications, particularly for its action on cell signaling pathways (purinergic receptors, kinase enzymes, etc.).
In the laboratory, suramin is used for:
- To validate pharmacodynamic effects in experimental formulations,
- To study molecular interactions in model biological systems,
- Evaluate the presence or absence of synthetic residues in complex extracts,
- Testing stability or controlled release in targeted solutions.
Why measure suramin?
Suramin testing is required in several critical situations:
- Verification of the active concentration in test formulations,
- Quality control of experimental solutions or pilot batches,
- Cross-contamination analysis in plant extracts or mixed products,
- Stability studies in complex matrices (solvents, buffer solutions, biochemical mixtures).
It is also used in the preclinical development phase for innovative applications, including testing on biological systems in vitro or ex vivo.
Analytical technique: High-sensitivity LC-MS/MS
Given the complex structure of suramin and its physicochemical properties, the assay is generally carried out by:
- LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry): reference method for achieving high sensitivity and excellent specificity in complex or dilute matrices.
- HPLC-UV: applicable in certain standard cases, when the concentration is high and the matrix is simple.
YesWeLab selects the most suitable method based on the type of sample (aqueous solution, complex extract, formulation under development) and the required detection threshold.
Analyzed matrices
We propose the determination of suramin on the following matrices:
- Experimental formulations (injectable solutions, products under development),
- Complex extracts used in contamination or residue testing,
- Testing solutions for biological or chemical trials,
- Samples from academic or industrial R&D projects.
Our partner laboratories are equipped to process these sensitive matrices with validated protocols, in compliance with current quality standards (ISO 17025, GLP depending on the project).
Sectors of application
Suramin testing primarily concerns the following sectors:
- Biomedical and pharmacological research,
- Development of innovative formulations (biotech, pharma, cosmetics),
- Natural health R&D laboratories wishing to eliminate any risk of cross-contamination,
- Plant extracts industry incorporating advanced purity controls.
For broader analyses, it can be beneficial to combine this assay with other LC-MS/MS tests for active or undesirable substances. For example, see our information sheet on the assay of yohimbine or piperine for multi-component analytical profiles.
