Description

Objective of the analysis

Analysis of shear deformation allows us to characterize the mechanical behavior of a material or product subjected to tangential stress. This stress induces a deformation (or shear rate) whose intensity and rate of response reveal the internal structure of the product, its strength, plasticity, or fluidity.

This analysis is essential for:

  • Understanding the mechanical behavior of gels, pastes, complex fluids, or polymers
  • Optimize the texture or consistency of a product
  • Identify a yield stress threshold
  • To study the mechanical stability, resilience, or fragility of a structure
  • Adapt the transformation processes (mixing, pumping, extrusion)

Methodology

The sample is placed in a rheometer or mechanical tester which applies a shear stress (rate or stress control). The resulting deformation (or rate of deformation) is measured to construct a stress vs. strain or viscosity vs. shear .

The analysis can be carried out by:

  • Static or oscillatory mode (dynamic rheology)
  • Variable temperature (thermo-rheological study)
  • Suitable geometries: cone-plane, parallel plates, concentric cell

Affected matrices

  • Cosmetic products: creams, gels, balms, masks
  • Foods: yogurts, sauces, purees, fermented products
  • Pharmaceuticals: ointments, syrups, topical gels
  • Molten or dispersed polymers: resins, glues, waxes
  • Flexible materials or organogels: technical pastes, coatings, slurries

Industrial applications

  • Development of functional textures (ease of application, spreading, shape retention)
  • Validation of rheological stability over time
  • Quality control: inter-batch reproducibility
  • Definition of manufacturing parameters: pumping speed, extrusion force
  • Predictive studies: behavior under mechanical stress
