Description
Objective of the analysis
Shear deformation analysis characterizes the mechanical behavior of a material or product subjected to tangential stress. This stress induces a deformation (or shear rate) whose intensity and response speed reveal the internal structure of the product, its strength, plasticity or fluidity.
This analysis is essential for:
- Understanding the mechanical behavior of gels, pastes, complex fluids or polymers
- Optimize the texture or consistency of a product
- Identify a yield stress threshold
- Study the mechanical stability, resilience or fragility of a structure
- Adapt processing methods (mixing, pumping, extrusion)
Methodology
The sample is placed in a rheometer or mechanical tester that applies a shear stress (rate or strain control). The resulting strain (or strain rate) is measured to construct a or viscosity vs. shear curve .
The analysis can be conducted by:
- Static or oscillatory mode (dynamic rheology)
- Variable temperature (thermo-rheological study)
- Adapted geometries: cone-plane, parallel plates, concentric cell
Affected matrices
- Cosmetic products: creams, gels, balms, masks
- Food: yogurts, sauces, purees, fermented products
- Pharmaceuticals: ointments, syrups, topical gels
- Molten or dispersed polymers: resins, glues, waxes
- Flexible materials or organogels: technical pastes, coatings, sludges
Industrial applications
- Development of functional textures (ease of application, spreading, shape recovery)
- Validation of rheological stability over time
- Quality control: inter-batch reproducibility
- Definition of manufacturing parameters: pumping speed, extrusion force
- Predictive studies: behavior under mechanical stress
Why go through YesWeLab?
YesWeLab connects you with laboratories specializing in rheology and materials mechanics. Our partners are equipped with high-performance rheometers that comply with ISO and ASTM standards, enabling precise analyses, even for sensitive or inhomogeneous products.
Our platform allows you to define precise shear ranges, integrate environmental constraints (temperature, humidity), and track your entire project via a secure customer area.
