Description
Scopolamine dosage allows the quantification of this tropane alkaloid naturally present in certain plants of the Solanaceae (notably Datura stramonium , Atropa belladonna and Hyoscyamus niger ).
Due to its powerful neuroactive (anticholinergic, sedative, hallucinogenic), scopolamine is strictly regulated . Its dosage is essential to guarantee the safety, compliance and traceability of products of plant origin.
Analytical methods
The analysis is carried out by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) , a reference method for the detection and quantification of tropane alkaloids at very low concentrations.
- LC-MS/MS : high sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility.
- Possibility of simultaneous dosing with other alkaloids such as atropine and hyoscyamine .
- Compliance with European guidelines (EU Regulation No. 2021/1408) on natural contaminants in foodstuffs and supplements .
Industrial applications
Scopolamine dosage applies in different contexts:
- Control of plant extracts used in food supplements or phytosanitary products.
- Monitoring of plant raw materials potentially contaminated with toxic plants (e.g., cross-contamination in batches of tea or dried herbs).
- Regulatory control for the marketing of herbal products.
- Toxicological and pharmacognostic analysis for research and development.
Analyzed matrices
- Plant extracts (leaves, stems, seeds)
- Food supplements
- Infusions, herbal teas, plant powders
- Phytosanitary products and botanical formulations
Further analyses recommended
For a complete control of alkaloids and plant contaminants, YesWeLab recommends:
- Atropine dosage : tropane alkaloid associated with scopolamine,
- Hyoscyamine dosage : active isomer of atropine,
- Nicotine assay : detection of natural alkaloids in plants or extracts,
- Pyrrolizidine assay : search for other toxic plant alkaloids.
