Description

Residual solvent analysis allows for the detection and quantification of traces of volatile organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, acetone, hexane, toluene, or dichloromethane, present after a manufacturing, extraction, or packaging process . These compounds, used as dissolving or cleaning agents, can remain in the final product and pose risks to health or material quality.

This analysis is essential to ensure regulatory compliance , particularly according to the ICH Q3C guidelines (for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products) or European regulations on food contact materials (EC No. 1935/2004) .

Analytical methods: GC-FID and GC-MS

gas chromatography techniques :

  • GC-FID (gas chromatography with flame ionization detection) : used for the quantitative determination of volatile and semi-volatile organic solvents.
  • GC-MS (gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) : allows for fine and specific identification of solvents, even in trace amounts (<1 ppm).

These methods guarantee highly sensitive detection , high selectivity and complete traceability of results, in accordance with ISO 17025 standards .

Industrial applications

The measurement of residual solvents is commonly required in the following sectors:

  • Packaging and polymers : control of solvents used during the extrusion, printing or cleaning of films and resins.
  • Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals : verification of solvents used for the extraction of active ingredients or formulation.
  • Food and nutraceutical industry : control of extraction solvents in powders, dry extracts or essential oils.
  • Technical materials and coatings : identification of organic traces that may alter the physico-chemical properties of materials.

This analysis can be complemented by the measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or the measurement of dichloromethane for a thorough control of residual emissions.

Matrices involved

YesWeLab's partner laboratories perform residual solvent analysis on:

  • Plastic films and packaging
  • Resins, adhesives and polymers
  • Plant extracts, powders and semi-finished products
  • Cosmetic, food and technical formulations

Each protocol is adapted to the matrix , the expected solvent profile and the applicable regulatory framework .
