Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) determination
Description
Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) ( CAS No. 10102-44-0) is a major air pollutant , produced primarily by fuel combustion , industrial processes , and certain photochemical reactions . An irritant and oxidizing gas, it has a direct impact on human health and contributes to the formation of tropospheric ozone and acid rain .
NO₂ measurement allows its concentration to be measured in the air or gases emitted by industrial installations, in order to assess air quality , control emissions and verify regulatory compliance with European environmental standards (Directive 2008/50/EC).
Analytical methods: colorimetry and GC-MS
Nitrogen dioxide analysis can be carried out using several complementary approaches:
- Colorimetry : a classical chemical method based on the Griess-Saltzman reaction , where NO₂ is absorbed in a specific solution and then quantified by absorbance measurement.
- GC-MS (gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) : advanced technique allowing selective and sensitive detection of NO₂ and other nitrogen oxides present in complex gases.
- Automatic analyzers (NDIR, CLD) : for continuous monitoring of NO₂ concentrations in ambient air or process emissions.
reliable, reproducible measurements (EN 14211, ISO 6768, EPA 7E).
Industrial and environmental applications
Nitrogen dioxide measurement applies to different contexts:
- Ambient air quality monitoring : measurement campaigns in urban, industrial or sensitive areas.
- Industrial emissions control : monitoring of gaseous effluents from boilers, engines, incinerators or chemical plants.
- Environmental impact studies : assessment of atmospheric dispersion and compliance of emissions.
- Research and innovation : development of sensors, filters or pollution control processes.
This analysis can be complemented by the measurement of nitrogen monoxide (NO) or sulfur dioxide (SO₂) for a complete assessment of air pollutants.
Affected matrices
Our partner laboratories perform NO₂ analysis on various matrices:
- Ambient air (indoors, outdoors, industrial areas)
- Industrial or combustion gases
- Emissions from engines, boilers, incinerators
- Work or production facility atmospheres
Each protocol is tailored to the type of sample, the expected concentration levels, and the applicable regulatory requirements.
