Description

Lucidin is a natural anthraquinone primarily extracted from Rubia tinctorum ) , but also found in other dye plants. Historically used as a red vegetable dye, it is also known for its biological activities (antioxidant, antimicrobial). However, its genotoxic potential makes it a molecule that should be closely monitored, particularly in extracts intended for food or nutraceuticals.

The dosage of lucidin is therefore crucial in the context of:

  • quality control of plant extracts
  • on the safety of finished products containing anthraquinone plants
  • regulatory compliance, particularly with regard to European regulations on food supplements and risky ingredients

Analysis methodology

Lucidin analysis is based on high-precision chromatographic techniques:

  • HPLC-DAD (UV detection between 254 and 430 nm depending on the matrices)
  • LC-MS or LC-MS/MS for complex or low concentration extracts
  • Extraction adapted according to the matrix (hydroalcoholic solvent or mild acid for dry plants)

The methods are generally developed on C18 columns, in reverse phase, with acetonitrile or methanol gradient elution.

Affected matrices

  • Dry extracts of Rubia tinctorum , Morinda , etc.
  • Plant powders for nutraceutical use
  • Capsules and herbal formulations
  • Cosmetic products or natural colorants of plant origin

Industrial applications

  • Standardization of madder extracts and control of the anthraquinone profile
  • Verification of the absence or compliance with regulatory thresholds for risky ingredients
  • Development of natural formulations integrating bioactive or coloring molecules
  • Response to regulatory agency requirements for the safety of food supplements and cosmetics
