Description

Objective of the analysis

Gas analysis is used to determine the qualitative and/or quantitative composition of a gas sample. This analysis applies to simple or complex mixtures and can be targeted (known compounds) or exploratory (broad research). It is essential in many industrial fields for:

  • Control the quality of air , modified atmospheres or technical gases
  • Assess emissions from solid or liquid materials
  • Check regulatory or environmental
  • Characterize products resulting from chemical or thermal

Available analytical techniques

Depending on the nature of the compounds to be identified or quantified, different methods are used:

  • Gas chromatography (GC) : separation of volatile compounds
  • GC-MS (mass spectrometry) : precise identification of compounds
  • Infrared (IR) or UV-Vis : functional recognition
  • Absorption spectroscopy : measurement of the concentration of specific gases
  • Semi-quantitative analysis : comparison between samples without exhaustive calibration

When compounds are known in advance, analysis is more targeted, rapid, and economical. In the absence of prior data, a exploratory approach can be considered.

Common applications

  • Analysis of industrial gases, waste gases or medical gases
  • Purity control and impurity detection
  • Monitoring of thermal or oxidative degradation (materials, polymers)
  • R&D studies on the kinetics of degassing or volatile emissions
  • Verification of the conformity of modified atmospheres in the food industry

Affected matrices

  • Pure or mixed gas samples
  • Gases emitted by solids , liquids , or complex formulations
  • Atmospheres in closed systems (packaging, test chambers)
