Description

Xanthotoxin , also known as 8-methoxypsoralen, is a furanocoumarin naturally present in certain plants of the Apiaceae and Rutaceae families, such as celery, parsley, fig, or bergamot. This molecule is known for its powerful photosensitizing effects, and its accumulation can lead to skin reactions in the presence of UV light.

Used in low doses in dermatology (particularly in PUVA therapy), xanthotoxin is, however, strictly regulated in cosmetic products, foodstuffs and plant extracts. Its dosage is essential to guarantee consumer safety and ensure compliance with European regulations (Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, SCCS recommendations).

Analysis methods: HPLC-DAD and LC-MS

Quantitative analysis of xanthotoxin is based on liquid chromatography techniques suitable for complex extracts:

  • HPLC-DAD (diode array detection): a common and effective method for the determination of xanthotoxin in essential oils, extracts or cosmetics.
  • LC-MS (liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry): recommended for low concentration matrices or for more in-depth research of associated furanocoumarins (bergapten, isopimpinellin, etc.).

The methods used in our network of partner laboratories allow precise and sensitive quantification, compliant with current standards, and applicable to different types of products.

Why measure xanthotoxin?

The dosage of xanthotoxin responds to several industrial, regulatory and health issues:

  • Ensure the safe use of plant extracts in cosmetic or food products.
  • Respect the maximum levels authorized by European cosmetic regulations (≤ 1 mg/kg in leave-on products containing photosensitizing essential oils).
  • Control natural extracts from plants rich in furanocoumarins (celery, angelica, bergamot, etc.).
  • Identify potential risks of photosensitization or toxicity through ingestion or skin contact.
  • Meet the requirements of quality certifications (COSMOS, ISO 16128, etc.) or exports.

Analyzed matrices

Our partner laboratories carry out the determination of xanthotoxin in various matrices:

  • Essential oils (bergamot, lemon, angelica, etc.)
  • Plant extracts for food supplements or cosmetics
  • Cosmetics: creams, lotions, perfumes, sunscreens
  • Food: celery juice, marinades, jams, flavored preparations
  • Technical formulations: premix, botanical raw materials, incense

Each matrix is prepared according to a rigorous protocol (extraction, filtration, purification) to guarantee reliable quantification of xanthotoxin.

Areas of application

Xanthotoxin measurement is essential in several industrial sectors:

  • Cosmetics industry: control of photosensitizing essential oils, compliance of leave-in products
  • Nutraceuticals and phytotherapy: safety of plant extracts rich in furanocoumarins
  • Food industry: control of juices, drinks and preparations containing celery, fennel or bergamot
  • Analytical research: studies on skin toxicity, UV/plant molecule interactions
