Dosage of transaminases (ASAT, ALT, GOT)
Description
Transaminases (AST, ALT, AST) are liver enzymes that play a central role in amino acid metabolism . Their enzymatic activity is used as an indicator of liver health and function in animals. Abnormally high levels may indicate liver damage , metabolic stress , or adverse effects related to an active ingredient or additive .
Transaminase measurement is essential in monitoring the safety of nutraceutical and veterinary products , as well as in toxicity and metabolism studies .
Analytical methods: enzymatic and colorimetric
Transaminase analysis is performed using standardized methods:
- Enzymatic method : measures the activity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) via the transformation of a specific substrate into a measurable product.
- Colorimetric method : detection of the evolution of NADH (enzymatic cofactor) by spectrophotometry, allowing precise quantification of enzymatic activity.
These tests are carried out on animal biological samples (serum, plasma, organ homogenates) and comply with international standards of good laboratory practice (GLP) , particularly in the context of regulatory studies.
Applications in animal health and research
Transaminase testing is widely used in the following sectors:
- Animal health : monitoring of liver function in livestock or laboratory animals.
- Toxicology and pharmacology : evaluation of the hepatic impact of active substances, supplements or veterinary drugs.
- Animal nutraceuticals : validation of the safety and efficacy of natural ingredients or nutritional additives.
- Regulatory studies (OECD, EFSA) : monitoring of product safety and compliance before placing on the market.
This test can be combined with glutathione peroxidase (GPx) or superoxide dismutase (SOD) for a comprehensive assessment of oxidative stress and liver health .
Affected matrices
YesWeLab's partner laboratories perform transaminase testing on:
- Animal serums and plasmas
- Tissue samples (liver, kidney, muscle)
- Extracts or formulations intended for animal health
- Nutraceutical products and animal feed additives
Each analytical protocol is adapted to the type of sample , the purpose of the test (tolerance study, performance evaluation, quality control) and the applicable reference standards
