Description

NOGE (Nonylphenol Glycidyl Ether) is an organic compound widely used as a reagent or plasticizer in epoxy resins and industrial formulations. However, due to its potential endocrine disrupting properties and toxicity, it is classified as a hazardous substance and is the subject of special attention under European regulations.

In materials intended for food contact (MCDA), the presence of NOGE is strictly regulated. Its dosage is therefore essential to verify the conformity of materials and guarantee consumer safety.

Analytical methods
NOGE analysis is based on high-precision chromatographic techniques:

  • LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) for sensitive detection in complex matrices.
  • GC-MS for quantification in volatile or semi-volatile formulations.
  • GC-FID for routine analyses enabling rapid monitoring.

These approaches are chosen based on the matrix (resin, glue, coating, ink) and sensitivity requirements.

Matrices concerned
The dosage of NOGE can be carried out in different industrial matrices:

  • Epoxy resins and their formulations
  • Protective coatings applied to metal or plastic packaging
  • Glues and adhesives used in the manufacture of packaging
  • Inks and varnishes used in printing on food media
  • Recycled materials that may contain residual traces of NOGE

Industrial applications

  • Regulatory control : demonstrate compliance of materials with Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, which prohibits the use of NOGE as a monomer or additive in food contact plastics.
  • Consumer safety : preventing the migration of toxic substances into food.
  • Material quality : ensuring safe and stable formulations for packaging, inks or coatings.
  • Environmental monitoring : assess the possible presence of NOGE in recycled materials and limit the risks of recontamination.

Additional analyses
The NOGE assay can be combined with other analyses for a complete evaluation of the materials:

Regulations and quality issues
Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 explicitly prohibits the use of NOGE as a monomer or additive in food-contact plastic materials. In addition, the REACH Directive imposes reporting and assessment requirements for potentially hazardous substances, including NOGE.

Analytical control is therefore a prerequisite for any company producing or using epoxy resins, coatings or inks intended to come into contact with food. Failure to control this parameter exposes risks of regulatory non-compliance, market withdrawal and loss of consumer confidence.

YesWeLab Expertise
YesWeLab collaborates with a network of partner laboratories specialized in the analysis of materials and polymers, ISO 17025 accredited and some COFRAC recognized. Each sample is directed to the most appropriate method and laboratory according to the matrix and the desired sensitivity.

Thanks to our digital platform, we simplify analysis management: quote requests, online tracking, and centralized results. Since 2020, YesWeLab has been supporting manufacturers, distributors, and design offices in ensuring compliance of their materials and packaging.
