Description
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is a key enzyme in anaerobic metabolism, catalyzing the conversion of lactate to pyruvate. It is present in most tissues and serves as a marker of cellular integrity: any release of LDH into biological fluids may indicate injury, inflammation, or cytotoxicity.
Measuring LDH levels is particularly useful in:
- Monitoring the physiological state of animals
- The assessment of inflammatory or infectious reactions
- In vitro cytotoxicity tests on animal cell cultures
- Characterization of veterinary or nutraceutical products
Analytical methods
LDH levels are measured using two main approaches:
- Spectrophotometric enzymatic method: measurement of the catalytic activity of LDH on NADH, rapid and standardized method.
- Immunoenzymatic method (ELISA): specific quantification of LDH isoforms in complex matrices, with high sensitivity.
These methods allow for reliable measurement of LDH in different types of samples from animal health.
Frequently analyzed matrices
- Animal serums and plasmas
- Non-medical biological fluids
- Extracts or cell cultures of animal origin
- Enriched or functional veterinary products
Applications of LDH dosage
- Quality control of veterinary supplements
- Biocompatibility or cellular toxicity tests
- Animal nutritional or metabolic studies
- Monitoring inflammation markers in veterinary research
- Analysis of the effectiveness of additives or functional ingredients
