Description

GMO testing allows for the detection of genetically modified organisms in plant-based raw materials, processed foods, nutraceutical supplements, or animal feed products .
This analysis is essential to guarantee traceability , regulatory compliance , and transparent labeling ("GMO-free" or <0.9%).

35S promoters NOS terminators , or marker genes specific to transgenic species such as MON810 maize , Roundup Ready soybeans , GT73 rapeseed , etc.).

Analytical methods: PCR, ELISA and DNA sequencing

GMO testing combines several complementary approaches depending on the nature of the product and the desired level of precision:

  • Real-time PCR (qPCR) : reference method for the detection and quantification of transgenic DNA , capable of identifying target sequences with very high sensitivity (down to 0.01%).
  • ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) : allows the rapid detection of proteins expressed by GMOs , such as herbicide or insect resistance proteins.
  • DNA sequencing (NGS – Next Generation Sequencing) : an advanced technique used to map genetic insertions and identify GMOs not referenced in standard databases.

All these methods meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 and Regulation (EC) No 1830/2003 concerning the traceability and labelling of food and feed containing GMOs.

Applications and regulatory challenges

GMO testing is used in various contexts:

  • Quality control of plant raw materials (maize, soybeans, rapeseed, rice, cotton, etc.).
  • Labelling verification non-GMO products (<0.9%).
  • Regulatory compliance for import/export within the European Union.
  • Monitoring of organic and non-GMO supply chains.
  • Control of food supplements and nutraceuticals based on plant extracts.

This analysis can be complemented by the measurement of processed animal proteins (PAT) or the measurement of specific plant DNA to strengthen product traceability.

Affected matrices

YesWeLab's partner laboratories perform GMO testing on:

  • Plant-based raw materials (maize, soybeans, rapeseed, rice, cotton, beetroot…)
  • Processed products (flours, oils, compound foods, lecithins, extracts)
  • Nutraceutical products and food supplements
  • Animal feed
  • Certified organic or “GMO-free” products

Each method is selected based on the matrix , the desired detection rate and the applicable regulations .
