Description
Isophorone diamine (IPDA) is a cycloaliphatic amine used as a curing agent in epoxy resins and polymer coatings . This compound plays a role in polymer crosslinking, improving their mechanical and chemical resistance. However, unreacted IPDA residues can remain in finished materials and migrate into food, hence the need for rigorous analytical control .
IPDA assay allows its residual concentration to be quantified in various matrices (internal coatings, adhesives, plastics, varnishes, glues) in order to assess their regulatory compliance according to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on materials in contact with food.
Analytical methods: GC-MS and LC-MS
IPDA analysis relies on sensitive chromatographic methods:
- GC-MS (gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) : used to detect and quantify volatile and semi-volatile traces after polymer extraction.
- LC-MS (liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) : suitable for the specific detection of primary and secondary amines in complex or non-volatile matrices.
Analytical protocols follow reference standards such as DIN EN ISO 18857 or internally validated methods accredited to ISO 17025 , guaranteeing the reliability and traceability of results .
Industrial and regulatory applications
IPDA measurement is essential in several industrial contexts:
- Packaging and materials in contact with food : control of hardener residues in the internal coatings of boxes, films or varnishes.
- Epoxy adhesives and glues : verification of the potential migration of amines into food substrates.
- Technical coatings and paints : measurement of residual amines after polymerization.
- Composites and polymers industry : monitoring purity and crosslinking in resin-based formulations.
This analysis can be combined with the determination of primary aromatic amines or bisphenol A (BPA) for a complete characterization of migrations in epoxy materials .
Affected matrices
YesWeLab's partner laboratories perform IPDA testing on:
- Films, varnishes and internal coatings for packaging
- Epoxy resins and composite materials
- Industrial adhesives and glues
- Plastic or coated metal parts
- Food simulants and migration extracts
Each method is adapted to the type of matrix , regulatory detection limits and the specific needs of the client .
