Description

Calprotectin (CAS No. 83702-47-8) is a protein of the S100 family, expressed by activated neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages. It plays a key role in the body's immune defense mechanisms. In both animals and humans, calprotectin is now recognized as a non-invasive biomarker of intestinal inflammation and has numerous applications in veterinary diagnostics, therapeutic monitoring, and digestive health control.

Why measure calprotectin in animal health?

Calprotectin measurement is particularly useful for:

  • Detecting or monitoring gastrointestinal inflammation in animals (enteritis, colitis, IBD)
  • Assessing inflammatory status in infectious or chronic contexts
  • Monitor the effectiveness of veterinary treatments (anti-inflammatories, probiotics, specialized diets)
  • Develop or validate innovative veterinary products (functional foods, supplements, probiotics)
  • Conducting preclinical clinical studies on animal models

It is an indirect diagnostic tool, without the use of invasive methods, allowing for reliable quantification of local inflammation in the digestive tract.

Available analysis methods

Calprotectin measurement relies on specific analytical biology techniques, recognized for their sensitivity and reproducibility:

  • ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay): an immunoenzymatic method widely used to detect calprotectin in animal biological matrices. It allows for precise quantification using validated kits.
  • Spectrophotometry: used as a complement or in adapted formats for the measurement of absorbance after enzymatic reaction, according to standard protocols.

These methods allow work on animal stool samples, biological extracts or formulations for veterinary use.

Affected matrices

Calprotectin assays are applicable to various matrices of animal origin, including:

  • Animal feces (dogs, cats, ruminants, horses…) for non-invasive diagnosis
  • Finished veterinary products (enriched formulas, probiotics, prebiotics)
  • Raw materials or biological extracts in a formulation or research context

Industrial applications

Applications of calprotectin assays in animal health include:

  • Quality control of veterinary products intended for digestive health
  • Bioavailability and mechanism of action studies in preclinical trials
  • Development of functional veterinary formulations
  • Validation of health claims for nutritional or nutraceutical products for animals
  • Veterinary research on inflammatory mechanisms
