Bottle tests
Description
Bottle tests are used to check the mechanical strength, performance and dimensional conformity of rigid packaging intended for the packaging of liquids. These tests concern both glass and plastic bottles (PET, HDPE, PP) as well as those made of metal or composite .
They are essential for checking strength, leak-tightness, resistance to internal pressure or falling, as well as compliance with packaging and transport standards .
Methods and parameters measured
Bottle testing covers several types of physical and mechanical tests adapted to the constraints of use:
- Drop tests : measurement of impact resistance to assess resistance to breakage or deformation after impact.
- Compression or crushing tests : determination of the maximum force supported before rupture, useful for storage and palletizing.
- Internal pressure tests : verification of resistance to pressure exerted by the liquid, particularly important for carbonated drinks.
- Leak tests : detection of leaks or closure defects on cap/bottle systems.
- Dimensional control : measurement of roundness, height, wall and neck thickness.
- Accelerated aging tests to assess the stability of the material over time or under environmental constraints.
These tests are carried out according to ISO, ASTM, EN standards or according to manufacturers' specifications , guaranteeing compliance with the requirements of the packaging sector.
For additional analyses, also discover the compression test , the tensile test or the leak test .
Industrial applications
Bottle testing is used at every stage of development, manufacturing and quality control:
- Food and beverage packaging : inspection of glass or PET bottles intended for water, juices, sodas, wines or oils.
- Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals : verification of the resistance and compatibility of plastic or aluminum bottles with the packaged products.
- Chemical and detergent industry : testing of resistance to solvents and acids, measurement of chemical and mechanical compatibility.
- Materials and polymers : validation of the properties of resins, additives and formulations used in the manufacture of packaging.
These analyses guarantee packaging safety , regulatory compliance and customer satisfaction , while reducing the risks of non-compliance in production.
Analytical interest and complementarity
Bottle testing can be combined with other tests for a complete evaluation of the material and performance of the finished product:
- Bending test to assess wall stiffness;
- DSC thermal analysis to study polymer crystallinity;
- TGA analysis to measure thermal stability;
- FTIR infrared spectroscopy to identify the composition of materials;
- Total immersion tests to assess the resistance of packaging to prolonged contact with liquids.
These complementary approaches ensure a complete characterization of the physical and chemical performance of packaging.
