Description

Bixin is a natural carotenoid extracted primarily from the seeds of Bixa orellana (annatto tree), used as a food coloring (E160b), a natural pigment in cosmetics, or as an active ingredient in some plant-based formulations. Bixin determination is essential for ensuring the quality and stability of annatto extracts, standardizing batches, or verifying compliance with regulatory specifications.

The analysis is usually carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), with UV-visible detection, due to the specific absorbance of this orange pigment.

It is applicable to various matrices: oily extracts, powders, food formulations, or cosmetics. This dosage is particularly relevant in the food industry, natural cosmetics or technical dyes of plant origin.
