Description
Bixin a food coloring (E160b), a natural pigment in cosmetics, or an active ingredient in plant extracts, it is an essential marker for the standardization and quality of annatto-based products. Its measurement allows verification of the actual pigment content, ensures batch consistency, and controls the stability of colored formulations.
Analytical method
Bixin analysis is generally performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV-visible detection, due to its characteristic absorbance in the visible spectrum. Depending on the matrix and sensitivity requirements, the analysis can also be coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS), particularly when distinguishing bixin from other carotenoids present in the extract.
The method allows for precise quantification, even in complex matrices rich in pigments, polyphenols, or aromatic compounds. A preliminary extraction step may be necessary for fatty, concentrated, or highly oily products.
Analyzed matrices
Bixin dosage is applicable to a wide range of products:
- annatto extracts (oily or water-soluble)
- vegetable powders or coloring concentrates
- food supplements
- colored food products (butters, cheeses, sauces)
- tinted cosmetic formulations
- natural ingredients used in hair coloring or UV protection
This analysis is also used to verify the authenticity of extracts, detect possible adulterations, or control the thermal and oxidative stability of the pigment.
Industrial interest
For manufacturers in the food processing, nutraceutical, or natural cosmetics industries, measuring bixin levels allows them to:
- to ensure the conformity of natural dyes
- standardize annatto extracts
- check the stability of batches in production
- validate the claims regarding coloring or antioxidant properties
- checking raw materials before manufacturing
- anticipate pigment degradation during storage or heating
Dosage is particularly relevant in food formulations sensitive to oxidation or in cosmetic products where colorimetric stability is essential.
YesWeLab Expertise
YesWeLab works with a network of specialized chromatography laboratories capable of performing precise carotenoid assays in complex matrices. Our partner laboratories are rigorously selected, and most are ISO 17025 and COFRAC certified and/or accredited. For each request, we identify the most suitable method and provide tailored technical support, from analysis to results delivery.
Our platform allows you to centralize your analysis requests, track test progress, and easily access reports. Since 2020, we have been supporting numerous manufacturers in controlling the quality of their natural ingredients and plant-based colorants.
