Description

Objective of the analysis

The analysis of gases emitted by a sample makes it possible to identify and quantify the volatile compounds released by a solid or liquid subjected to a specific temperature or environment. It applies to phenomena of thermal degradation , evaporation, residual emissions or chemical reactions.

This analysis is essential for:

  • Assess the composition of gaseous emissions from a material, ingredient or finished product
  • Controlling air quality in confined environments
  • Check thermal stability or degassing kinetics
  • Meet regulatory, environmental or safety requirements

Methodology

The sample is placed in a suitable enclosure (tubular furnace, microchamber, etc.) and subjected to a controlled sweep gas (air, nitrogen, helium, etc.). The gas carries away the volatile compounds emitted, which are then analyzed:

  • In global mode : single sample collected over the duration of the analysis
  • In kinetic mode : regular samples to monitor the evolution of emissions over time or temperature

The influential parameters (temperature, ramps, isotherms, gas flow) are fully customizable according to the desired emission profile.

Associated analytical techniques

  • Gas chromatography (GC)
  • GC-MS (coupled with mass spectrometry)
  • Infrared (IR) spectroscopy
  • Bagged collection for deferred analysis

Application examples

  • Degassing of polymer materials, textiles, coatings, waxes
  • Emissions of solvents or residues in cosmetic or industrial formulations
  • Volatile compounds resulting from the degradation of biomass or essential oils
  • Study of the thermal stability of complex formulations
  • Simulation of storage or usage conditions
